All sustainability measures or approaches must be considered in terms of their total net environmental impact. In the past, some sustainable development concepts have proven to have either questionable or even a detrimental net impact on the environment, when evaluated on an overall, cradle-to-grave, carbon and environmental impact basis.
If pursued carefully and thoughtfully, environmental responsibility and sustainable development principles do not need to reduce an organization’s opportunity for growth and profitability. Instead, when done properly, sustainability measures will almost always add to, rather than subtract from, an organization’s bottom line, at the same time as they decrease the organization’s environmental footprint.
